ArtRage Tutorial – Stencils

Saltar al español

One of my favourite ArtRage tools is the stencil, if you know how to use them they can be a very powerful tool.

Although I don't normally use the standard stencils that ArtRage has, I've come up with a way of giving a little texture to my artwork by using stencils.

All you need is a good texture image, in black and white and with a very high contrast, then just bring the image as a stencil by going to Tools > Stencil Options > Select Stencil From Disk.

When you bring an image as a stencil the black part becomes transparent and the white is opaque, the grays become different levels of opacity. Now you just need to paint on top of the stencil, and the paint won't go through the opaque part of the it, leaving a distinct texture or shape, like in the next image.

The stencil can be inverted too, this is especially useful to put a higher contrast between the shapes or just using different colors without mixing them and ruining the texture.

Of course You Can Also rotate, flip, and scale the stencil too.

The stencil can also be reversed, this is especially useful for putting a contrast higher among the forms, or just use different colors without mixing them and ruin the texture.

Of course, you can rotate, flip and scale the stencil too.

Checking Tones

I've been working like crazy on Trying to master the tones in my artwork, sincere Some People Say That When the tone is correct, the color Does not Really Matter That Much.

I Came up with a method to do this, is not that innovative, but it serves it's purpose.

Since I don't like working on grayscale before doing an illustration, and I work sort of alla prima, I'm constantly checking the tones in my images by desaturating them completely in Photoshop, especially in the early stages, this serves to check out the tones, keeping the higher contrast in the areas of interest, and as a study of lights and shadow.

In this illustration you can clearly see some examples of all that, although I did fix the tones a bit more in the following stages, this was a good starting point.

Over The Knee Hairbrush

ArtRage Tutorial – Square Head

I Decided to write two tutorials in a row ArtRage Since I Could not come up with a theme for the Other column last week, and I Had Something to write while I'm waiting for inspiration to strike me.

The final option of the oils is the “square head” one, which simply consists in selecting a flat brush instead of the usual round one.

This brush has the peculiarity that it's size doesn't obey the pressure of the stylus, after all, since it's a flat brush you can't lay a portion of it on the canvas (although I guess if one were to incline the brush one could place the tip on the canvas, but since I don't have a tablet that detects inclination in the stylus I haven't been able to verify this).

I usually use this brush for constructions and “square” objects, although it can also be used to give a more angled look to a face or cloth folds, it really depends on What you want to Communicate with the brush stroke.

The last option of the oils is "square head" which is simply select a flat brush instead of rounder to work with him.

This brush is unique in that its size is not adjustable under pressure to deal, after all, as is a flat brush can only sit on the entire canvas (I guess if you tip the brush can pose a tip the same, but since I have a tablet that detects the tilt of the stylus I could not verify this.)

usually occupy this brush to buildings and objects "square", but can also be employed to give a more hard or angled to the faces and folds of clothing depends on what you wish to communicate with the stroke.

Camera Work

Saltar al español

I recently bought a book called Camera Work, which is a compilation of the magazine with the same name edited by Alfred Stieglitz.

With all the atention I'd been giving to tone in my illustrations, I think a good black & white photography book helps a lot, it really emphazises some of the things that I'm looking to do, and the photographies has this really mysterious feel to it, I don't know how to describe it really, it seems from another age.

If you're looking to buy a photography book I really recommend this one, it was Re edited by Taschen on Their 25th aniversary and it has a good price, the only bad thing is That the size is small and I do not want my books just to sit on the shelves, I Gave this one a really good look and analize it, so the spine is Already a little worn out.

By the way, I'm open to recommendations if Anyone knows about a good photography book.

With all the attention I've been giving to the tones in my illustrations, I think a good book of black and white photography helps a lot, it really highlights some of the things I'm trying to do, and pictures have a strange feeling mystery, it is difficult to describe, are like a photograph of another era.

If you are looking to buy a photography book I highly recommend it, was re-published by Taschen in its 25 anniversary and it's cheap, the only bad thing is that it is a bit small, and because I just like to leave books adorning the shelves I have given a fairly long read, and back and looks a bit worn.

By the way, if you know good books on photography, I am looking for recommendations.
